At the same time these stocks already have proven to be resilient in the face of market ups and downs, giving some comfort to investors looking to limit downside risk, according to Barron’s columnist Michael Santoli.

Bespoke Investment Group provided Santoli with a list of 10 Standard & Poor’s 500 stocks that have shown little volatility over the past decade. The stock with the smallest spread between its 10-year high and low is Wal-Mart Stores (WMT).

The other nine are Kimberly-Clark (KMB), Progress Energy (PGN), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), SCANA (SCG), Coca-Cola (KO), Consolidated Edison (ED), H.J. Heinz (HNZ), Kraft Foods (KFT), and Waste Management (WM).

“Collectively, this hypothetical portfolio, equal-weighted, would today yield 3.6% in dividend income and by definition would pretty well weather any economic tumult that we might experience,” Santoli writes.
